LOG COLLECTION PROCEDURES FROM SYNOLOGY DEVICE

A. Collecting Debug.dat from a Synology Device Using Support Center

Using Support Center (More specific logs about a system problem, slowness, etc. )

To export logs from Support Center, follow those steps :

1. Open Support Center from Synology menu

2. Go to “Support Services” tab and in the “Log Generation” menu, select the logs that you want to check, then click “Generate logs”

3. Wait a few minutes while your NAS is generating the logs

4. The file generated by the NAS will be named “debug.dat“, you can open it using 7-Zip.

5. In the file you will find a directory named “dsm“, all the primary logs will be under the directory hierarchy : “dsm -> var -> log”

When the file has been generated it should be downloaded by browser.

The file generation can take a lot of time depending on the size of logs files.

It will create a tar file at the end, you can upload tar file to ZENfra or a ftpsite. Please refer ZENfra Log Upload Steps

B. Collecting device Logs from a Synology device Using Log Center package

Using Log Center package (Logs about backup, user connection, etc.)

On the Log Center > Logs page, you can view, search for, and export logs.

Specifications

The following functions are only provided by the Log Center package, but not the built-in Log Center application:

Archives logs by specified time, number of logs, the data size, and hosts

Sends logs to another log server

    Supports TCP and UDP transfer protocol

    Supports BSD (RFC 3164) and IETF (RFC 5424) format

    Supports secured SSL connection by importing certificates

    Supports sending logs filtered by service categories or log levels


Receives logs from the other log servers

    Supports TCP and UDP transfer protocol

Keeps the configuration history of the Log Center package

    Receives up to 3,000 syslog events per second

To search logs:

In the search drop-down menu, you can specify the following criteria depending on the situation:

Keyword: Enter keyword to search for log messages that contains the matching keyword.

Note:

You may use the following wildcard characters and operators for advanced search:


[*]: The wildcard represents zero or more non-space characters. For example, [a*n] can represent any word starting with [a] and ending with [n], such as [action], [attention], or [an].


[?]: The wildcard represents exactly one non-space character. For example, [ca?] can represent any word starting with [ca] and ending with only one character, such as [car], [cat], or [cap].


[AND]: The operator will show results which include search terms altogether. For example: [admin AND root] will show log results that include both [admin] and [root].


[OR]: The operator will show results which include one of the search terms. For example, [admin OR root] will show results that include either [admin] or [root].


[NOT]: The operator excludes words from your search. For example, [NOT admin] will show results that exclude [admin].


[()]: Parentheses enclose search terms to specify the order in which they are interpreted if both AND and OR are used. For example, [(admin OR root) AND NOT logged] will show results that include [admin] or [root], and then exclude [logged].

Date Range: Search for logs by the specified date range.

Level: Search for logs by the specified level.

Host name: Search for logs by the specified host name.

Program: Search for logs by the specified program name.

Category: Search for logs by the specified program category.

Click Search to search for logs matching the specified criteria.

To export logs:

Click the arrow next to the Export button.

Choose HTML or CSV to download the logs using your desired format.

How to upload Data in ZENfra

1. Navigate to Data Upload → Data Upload → Log Upload.


2. Select on the "Upload Data" option.


3. Select "Storage" option.


4. Select on the SYNOLOGY option.


5. Click on “Select Files to Upload” button to choose the files or drag the files from your system to the area above this button.

6. Click on “Upload” button for just uploading the log file or click on “Upload & Parse” button to upload the log and parse the data from log file. Click on “+” button to upload additional logs.

7. Data collection steps and instructions are described under "View Guide” button. Choose SYNOLOGY  log type to view the details.

8. Once the file has been parsed successfully, in the Status column of the Imported Data History table, you can see the “Successfully Parsed” message. If the file has been failed to parse then you will see a “Parse Failed” message in the status column.
